Hi,,
So the article I read was talking about the new apps that are coming out. Some for example involve adding page breaks when writting on certain devices so people can know how many pages they have written without having to print. What I got out of this article is a sense of dependence, obsession and addiction. The overall theme was basically how people are in need of more advanced technology to perform tasks they have. The author is a teacher and his classroom is through online teachings such as our own blogging class. Yet he is basically saying his class is not running perfectly smoothly because he is in need of more advanced technology. I find this to be ridicules. The amount of technology available today is amazing and everyday I am hearing about something new. I feel people have become so obsessed with technology they are getting ahead of them selves. They think since we can turn our car on with our phone means we can do ANYTHING! The authors class seems as if it was created to be compatible with a world that does not exist or at least does not exist yet. The obsession with this technology can even make people pushed out of shape if they do not have what they want. The title of the article even says "..Its About Time" implying as if we are so far behind in the technological world we can not function correctly today. We are perfect where we are and possibly so advanced in technology it is making people believe we can do things we cant. What needs to happen is we need to use the technology at hand and not try to do what we think the technology should do.

I found you article very interesting to read. Apps have become so popular and convenient for many people. There are apps that track down food places, movie times, and sport games. I think people like apps so much because it makes their lives much easier and simpler and how with a push of button how easy it is to find a place to eat. But the article talks about Google Docs. I think Google Docs may put Microsoft word out of business because first of all it is free and can be quickly accessed on the go. Additionally people are turning to Google Docs to complete tasks and communicate online. You cannot do that with just opening Microsoft Word or Excel. I think apps are going to continue to grow and just become random. There will app for everything or every task we do in life.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your views on Western society’s obsession with technology. People get so damn connected to their tech products that the feel unable live without them. Take away an average college student’s cell phone for a day, and they will probably break down from the stress. I honestly think that too much dependence on technology leads to depression; people need to learn to appreciate the things in life they should truly be thankful for. People are no longer content with having a meal to eat and a bed to sleep in; happiness is derived from buying a new iPad.
ReplyDeleteWe go through technology like crazy people. Always wanting the newest television. The newest laptop. The newest iPhone. The newest distraction. People aren’t happy with the things they have anymore – there is always yearning for more. Tech companies know this; I’m sure Apple already has the iPhone 5 6 and 7 designed, but is waiting to release them in order to maximize profits.
Just like Daft Punk said, “Buy it, use it, break it, fix it, Trash it, change it, mail - upgrade it.” Yes, I always find any excuse to include Daft Punk in my blog posts/comments.
I think about this all the time. Technology is always advancing and seems like something new is coming out every month. Our society really is obsessed with technology and are always needing newer and advancer technology. Like you I feel the technology we have today is fine and we can live with what we have. But the smart people in the world know that if they come up with something new people will buy it. Its a business world and people are advancing technology to make money off of it. Very interesting article and Ill see you in the morning for breakfast.

Hey SOUTHPAW!
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your blog post, I left my computer on my bed and walked around my house. I needed time to think. Your article encouraged me to analyze technology in today's society. After much deliberation, I came to the conclusion that I agree with you. We should be satisfied with where we are right now. We need to examine the positives and make the best of our situations. Technology will advance, we all just need to be patient and use our current resources to the best of our abilities. For instance, Carol has done a great job at utilizing current blogging sites to conduct this online class. Furthermore, we can always step up and assist in the production of new and advanced forms of technology.
What will the future look like? Will virtual reality take over? What a scary concept. Why can't we just enjoy the real world? Maybe we need to re-evaluate the role of technology within society.
