Favorite Reading

Hi,

My favorite reading would have to be about Second Life. I just found the whole concept of how you can create a whole other person if you wanted to. It allows you to basically create an image of your self in the way you wish to be seen. Some create what they already are and some create something completely differnet then what they are today. I found this most interesting because I feel this is what the internet and Social Networking sites allow you to do. They allow you to create what ever it is you want to create. In the real world the only way you can truly create is by changing you style of clothing or something small like that. Online you can change so much and the internet allows you to do this. There is nothing stopping you from being who you want to be and nothing stopping you from becoming something you wish to be viewed as. Second Life offers so much to people. That is why I enjoyed reading about Second Life so much.

What I learned/Favorite Thing/ Least Favorite/How can class Improve

Hi,

After taking this course I learned many things but also learned a very key thing. This key thing I learned is the value of technology. With out it we are a different world. Communication is something that is always being taken place and technology has made communication grow beyond comprehension. Talking to someone from five different countries is something that can easily be done no a days. People have been given a freedom to express feelings that they never had before. People can be who they want and even have some fun and make up an entirely different life. Social networking has brought socializing to another level and in my opinion has made it even better then it has been. People are more accessible and are able to venture out more then if technology was not around. My favorite thing in this class was reading everyone elses blogs. It let me view other peoples perspective and thoughts on topics. Some people even convinced me to believe them over myself. My least favorite thing was how long the readings were. The readings almost seem to be unbearably longs and almost made me lose focus. If I could improve the class I would make shorter readings but that's just my opinion. Until next time!

Most Interesting Readings and Most Interesting Thing about Concepts

The main readings I found to be most interesting would be readings that I could relate too. Such readings would be about Facebook and blogging. I never had a great interest towards blogging but since I have been blogging every week I have grown very fond of it. I enjoyed reading about how blogging can be used and what others have used it for. It is crazy how it essentially is another world that sometimes many people would rather be apart of then the real world. I also enjoyed reading about facebook. I myself like facebook and find it to be very useful. Reading about how facebook is growing so rapidly and being used in ways that make online communication reach new levels is fascinating. Lastly I like how we read articles that were from before the social networking era. People back then had some amazingly accurate ideas. Some things I read basically predicted the future. They had visions about where communication would go and technology made it a reality. It was interesting to read all of this because it was like watching a timeline before my eyes. I saw the beginning middle and end.

Whats so special about sony's massive data breach?

Hi,

This article is talking about the recent hacking of the Sony PlayStation network. This hacking is a rime example that not everything is perfect. Technology has brought so much to the world today and seems as if it is perfect in every way but it is not. It always seems that with every good thing there is something that makes it not perfect. Some examples can be that certain food taste amazing but it is extremely bad for you, alcohol can make someone feel good but too much will make your life hell, sex is great but there is the chance of an STD, cars can get you from place to place but your tires may pop and technology such as PlayStation is amazing but there are hackers!! What people need to realize is that things like this always happen that's why you should always be careful with what you put online. The main reason this is becoming such a big deal is because of the size of the hacking. The article says about 77 million customers were hacked and that is a lot of people! We all should just be very careful and hopefully technology will advance to a point were privacy can be guaranteed.

World Wide Web

Hi,

The title of the article says a lot in its self. World Wide anything is a bold statement to make because to have something be world wide it needs to be huge! The article talks about how the world wide web had certain expectations before it was available. The idea behind the world wide web was to offer a place that is full of information and knowledge that is available and from all around the world. These expectations were met and then some. The world wide web became so popular and abundant that it grew to unimaginable proportions. The world wide web is full of information from all over the world. The one downfall is viruses and hackers. With the amount of options available on the web it is easy to hide a virus or steal information. Having so much information is great but it has its flaws. As long as you are careful though everything should be fine.

A Virtual Death and A Real Dilemma

Hi,

So this article showed something that I take into consideration whenever I read something online. Trolls are talked about in the article and trolls are people who say certain things to grab peoples attention or to have people believe them. Most of the time they are no expert in the subject matter they are talking about. This is something that I can not stand. I have a very hard time believing anything I read online. When reading online I try to go to sites that seem to be very professional or at least well known. Especially when it comes to medical advice. Just think about someone in desperate need of help of some sort or have a simple question a real doctor can answer, yet they read false information and then problems or harm are done to them. I try to stay away from question and answer sites such as Answers.com. I find that people online think they know it all and i find that those people sometimes can have bias opinions or do not really know every aspect of what they are talking about. Although I may be wrong because I am on a blogging website talking about something I may not be an expert in myself. Yet if I am wrong does that prove my theory wrong or correct? think about it lol

New Apps....About time

Hi,,

So the article I read was talking about the new apps that are coming out. Some for example involve adding page breaks when writting on certain devices so people can know how many pages they have written without having to print. What I got out of this article is a sense of dependence, obsession and addiction. The overall theme was basically how people are in need of more advanced technology to perform tasks they have. The author is a teacher and his classroom is through online teachings such as our own blogging class. Yet he is basically saying his class is not running perfectly smoothly because he is in need of more advanced technology. I find this to be ridicules. The amount of technology available today is amazing and everyday I am hearing about something new. I feel people have become so obsessed with technology they are getting ahead of them selves. They think since we can turn our car on with our phone means we can do ANYTHING! The authors class seems as if it was created to be compatible with a world that does not exist or at least does not exist yet. The obsession with this technology can even make people pushed out of shape if they do not have what they want. The title of the article even says "..Its About Time" implying as if we are so far behind in the technological world we can not function correctly today. We are perfect where we are and possibly so advanced in technology it is making people believe we can do things we cant. What needs to happen is we need to use the technology at hand and not try to do what we think the technology should do.

Self Presentation and Privacy

This was a really interesting article. The overall focus was on blogging. People sometimes want to express who they are, their feelings and sometimes even secrets, yet where do they do this? A great medium is online blogging just like the blogging we are doing in this class. Main topics of this article was the practices blogger have and the expectations of privacy blogger have. The practices of blogger are simply them constantly writing new things daily , yearly or just over a period of time. This turns into a chronological expression of whatever they want to express. when looking at privacy it can be defined as "time where people are to left alone". Also privacy can mean that some people do not want other people to see things about themselves. I personally think when it comes to blogging yo have full control over privacy. You are the person writing the blog and can say whatever you want. You can leave out any information you wish to leave out.

The End of Books

I found this article to be the best one yet. I say this because it talks about one of the biggest things involved in technology. We have always had written work. We use to use paper and pen to write documents, books, letters but the times have changed. Technology is changing the popularity of things like books. We no longer need to have thousands of books to take up space and waste paper. We can literally have books after books on one single device. Any book worm back in the day would love this concept but would never be able to carry around all these books all day. I no see people on planes reading books on a metal square that is less then an inch thick! These new devices, some known as kindle, can hold books so you do not have to hold the actual book. Technology has changed the world in many ways but this is one of the largest ways it has.

Navigating Technomedia

Hey,

This was very interesting article.I enjoyed reading this piece of work. One of the main points of the article was based on affordability. Basically making technology affordable so everyone can have it. I like this idea because I would not like the fact that technology would be designated to certain group of people. If technology had a increased price range then whatever device you had would essential give you a rank in the social class. I feel today we have a small amount of that because there is no way I could afford something like an Ipad but in general technological devices seem affordable and reasonable.  Another point of the article is the influence broadcasting provided. The main use of broadcasting is the radio. The radio was a way to widely spread information. I was a great invention because it had a purpose and fulfilled its purpose the best of its ability. The radio was a stepping stone for music to be on the radio and later the t.v. The T.V not only provided information but also provided images for people to see.

Personal Dynamic Media

Hey,

So I found it amazing how accurately they envisioned the Dynamic Notebook. Today we have devices that are essentially exactly what they are talking about. I liked how they related it to our brains. We store so much knowledge in our brains and the device would do they same. The difference is that we do not always remember everything we hear. We are just not capable to memorize and organize so much information in our brains. Having a device would allow us to do such a thing. We can have a great amount of information organized and stored in a hand held device. They people had a vision that was extremely accurate. Today we have Ipads and Kindles. We can store thousands of books on one device and also have so many games and even a writing feature to store thoughts. What I am thinking about now is who is having visions today? and what visions are they? I would like to think that me myself have these images. I always think of new things we could have but I wonder if it will come true. Many people think that we have created everything but i believe we have not. I do not think we need to create anything else because I feel like we have enough but I do believe more will come.

From Computer Power and Human Reason

First off this article is Talking about a computer named ELIZA. ELIZA would be a computer full of information but contained human emotion as well. Simply it is technology and humans becoming more and more similar. This made me think about a previous article I did about the Watson computer. This computer was on jeopardy and simply swept the competition with its fast thinking knowledge. Why anyone would want to make technology like ELIZA to have human emotion is beyond me. I don't find having a computer that you can have a conversation with and laugh with very necessary. I actually find it a bit weird and scary. The fact that we are capable to have something close to that is impressive but I think is not being used properly. The main way I think this could be effectively used is figuring out solutions to problems. The computer is so advanced it can go over every possibility and figure out which one is the best. Global and human decision based problems could be answered effectively. Although that can still bring problems because some may argue that who ever designed the technology designed it with a certain mind set that others may not agree apon. Basically I believe that in the technological world we are doing to much and trying to do so many things just because we are capable of doing them. We are all capable of many things like jumping off of a bridge but most people are smart enough to realize that is a stupid idea so we don't do it. So everyone in the technological world needs to step away from the bridge and focus on important things rather then create a computer that can keep the lonely company.

SECOND LIFE

Hey,

So there is a huge chance that everything I am going to say is wrong according to the article, yet on a personal note is my opinion. In the article it talks about you "do" gender. Basically Gender is determined by how we act to things and personal characteristics. So If this is true I do believe people, like feminist, do not enjoy being labeled a certain gender because of his or her sex. They do not like this because once labeled a gender then they are believed to posses the characteristics that apply to that gender. I can see how people would get mad if they are thought to be something that they are not. This is something that I concluded and learned from the article. I also learned that in the second life "world" the main focus is on how people act. Assumptions anyone makes about another are now assumptions based off of actions and characteristics displayed. So if this is the case on second life then the stereotyping and labeling are no w gone. People are now free to do as they please and know that any judging done is based off of actions and not simply the sex the posses.

An iPhone App Helps the Blind Identify Currency

Not all technology advances are bad and this specific app the iphone has seems perfect. I remember the movie "Ray" with Jamie Foxx which was a movie about the singer Ray Charles. As you know Ray Charles is blind so when he receives his payment for a gig how does he know if he is being paid the correct amount? Ray simply does not know at all! In one scene Ray asked that his pay would be given to him in all one dollar bills so he could know exactly how much he was being paid. If Ray had this application back then he would not need to do that at all. This application tells you what type of bill is in front of you. What you do is turn on the camera put the bill in front of the phone and a voice will speak and tell you the type of bill it is. People with vision problems such as the blind can benefit from this application tremendously. I feel an invention like this is what we need in our society. Anything that can benefit people is good. I do not really like the unnecessary things people spend time making. If we spent more time creating things that would benefit people such as the blind the technology world would be more beneficial rather then pointless.

The Technology and The Society

My favorite part of the article was when it talked about the cause and effect. The T.v truly has done many things to us as a society both good and bad. It is tough to say it has done more harm then good but it seems to me the harm it has done is very visible. T.V to me is a drug. It is addicting and sometimes needed, I personally know people who can not sleep unless the T.V is on. I find myself a victim as well which I do not like. Once when my T.v was not working I put on a show I liked on my computer and it just was not the same. T.V is changing us as people and i don't know if it is a good thing. More and more are kids choosing to stay inside and watch T.V then go outside and do physical activities. Kids need to play! This drug though is capturing so many people. Another thing T.V is doing is ruining our perception of reality. So often to you watch things on T.V that seem so plausible and real yet in the real world it is never to be seen. Also people are losing their social skills. Watching is not an interaction it is simply just sitting and listening with no communication or skill required at all. The T.V was a great way to share information and news but I believe it is not being used for that as much anymore.

JUST LIKE ME ONLY BETTER

This article was very interesting and at the same time I could have guessed correctly about what it had to say. The big thing when it comes to Internet is the fact is the person reading is not in front of you or hearing your voice. So exagerating and lies are easy to get away with and a basic standard with people. I do not doubt people make things, such as avatars,  to be very similar to their real world self yet I doubt it is an exact replica.  People lie and exagrate all the time. If you look at the real world you can see the diversity in everyone even those of the same ethnic background. So why is it when you look at the avatar world there is more similarities then diversity. What I think about is since we as people are very diverse then even if we are lying why are we very similar? I believe that people are never satisfied with them selves and can always find something wrong. I also believe majority of people are in search of a certain image or identity yet we do not know what it is! The weird thing is that the more we try the more every one else starts to have similarities. I think we study things like online social network to try and figure out what everyone is trying to be! No one knows but the proof is there. I personally feel if everyone in the world was happy with themselves things would be completely different but that will not happen because it is not in are human nature. We are competitors and visualizers. If given the chance to change ourselves we might take it but what is it that everyone wants to be? and will we ever reach it?

iPad 2 Announcement: Users React To Apple's News

Hey,

So I found an article on the release of the new Ipad2. One of the main focuses on the article was what the reaction people will have regarding its release. They seemed confident that people would have a positive reaction but I found otherwise. I looked at other blogs on the Internet regarding the Ipad2 release and it was not positive. I only found two or three comments talking about how they like the Ipad2. I will have to agree with the negative comments myself. They talk about how the Ipad2 is coming out to soon after the original Ipad is out. I agree that it is in a way ridicoulse that they upgrade such a product so soon after its original release. I found out that in Wisconsin teachers are demanding an Ipad be apart of their contract and that they receive a new one every time it is updated. I don't even buy things like that for the main reason that soon enough what I have is going to be old. Something new and better is going to come out right after. This reminds me of the commercial I saw about technology advancing so fast. A man bought a 3-D T.V and as the movers were moving it in the movers truck was advertising a 4-D T.V. That scenario is very true because it is happening with the Ipad. In my opinion they need to create the best device they possibly can then release it. Don't release something that can easily be improved.

Uses and Gratifications

Hey,
I do agree that Myspace and Facebook do get used for people to play an active role in socialization. Sometimes people may even prefer to socialize online rather then face to face. Sometimes people have a hard time expressing their true feelings or emotions face to face and find online a place to easily express their emotions. I also agree that people construct their own identities on these online social networks. People can put anything they want up and display more then they could in a small conversation with someone. I think though that people can also create a false identity. It is very easy to put up things that do not pertain to you but people will believe anyways. I believe it is harder to fake your identity in person than it is to fake it online. People can not read your emotions online nor can they experience how you truly act. Online social networks can be helpful and can also be deceiving. I  found myself as a young kid on facebook putting up anything I thought was cool. I was so worried about what people would think of my page and if people would like my song or not. Sometimes my favorite song would never be on my myspace pae because I thought people would laugh and my identity would be ruined. So yes Facebook and myspace are a strong way for people to create their identity and make it available to a large mass of people.

IBM's Watson jeopardizes humanity in game 2

So as I was watching TV I saw that Jeopardy only had two contestants. This caught me off guard since I am use to three people answering questions. Then as I watched I realized that the third contestant was a computer. This computer, named Watson, was answering questions and answering far more questions then the human contestants. Watson seemed unstoppable! This article I read talks about how this computer is putting humans to shame, yet I personally don't find this as a surprise. Obviously A computer is going to be more proficient and correct then a human. What surprised me was how fast this computer had the answers. I guess when a question is picked it is sent to the computer through text. and then the computer searches for the answer in his database. Also Watson has decision making skills when it comes to gambling his money. When Watson had a 32% chance of answering a question correctly he bet a lower amount of money. Overall I find this very interesting. We are now reaching that time where computers can "think". They are capable to be on game shows!! As long as these computers do not get a mind of their own and start killing people I have no problem with it.

The Medium IS the Message

In this passage something stuck out to me more then anything. It was talked about how technology is an extension of ourselves. In this day and age we are no longer responsible for our own individualism but also the part of us in the technological world. Yet I find it funny how people treat this extension of themselves. One main analogy I can use is what my baseball coach told me. He told me that when a player is not doing well and is not succeeding he gets the blame. Kids tell the coach that what he taught does not work and causing him to fail. Then on the flip side when the kids succeed the coach gets no credit. Kids say THEY did it and THEY did great. No acknowledgment is given to the coach for helping. This all relates to the extension o ourselves. We tend to blame technology when they do not perform for use. We think the technology is ruining our image and ruining our technology extension. Then when technology performs greatly and does great we say we did it and it was all us. We need to realize that while we may be doing work ourselves we still need to respect our extension of ourselves.

CONSEQUENCES OF ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORKING

After reading this article it made me think about how online social networks are different from face to face relationships with people. The article tells how people on social network sites feel less anxious and posses greater self esteem . I can only think of one reason why. Its all about who we associate ourselves with. I personally feel in real life the face to face world it is difficult to find many people who posses the same interest or qualities as yourself. Lots of times people associate themselves with people who are completely different from them. This all changes when entering the online social networking world. Online it is easy to enter a blog group or find people with similar interest. If you enjoy old comic books i can bet somewhere online you can find an entire site where you can share ideas and thoughts. This explains the less anxious and greater self esteem. When you associate your self with people of similar nature it is easy to be your self with no worries. Its when you are surrounded by those who you do not feel comfortable being your self with that create problems. To be honest people do find people of similar qualities in the face to face world but not all the time. Online any one can find those people who they can feel comfortable with.

5 Ways to Improve Facebook Saftey

As we all know facebook is very popular. We share information about our lives and make information available on our page that we may not share on a daily basis in face to face communication. This is why we also would like to have some privacy as well on facebook. We have friend request we can accept or ignore, privacy settings and we can even block a certain person if we want. Although that's not all!! In the article 5 Ways to Improve Face Safety it talks about extra ways we can keep our safety on Facebook. The one main point i found the most effective is reporting abuse. Its tough to stop abuse and is seen A LOT! So instead of just looking at it or even laughing along with it just report it! Reporting doesn't take a lot of effort and is a great way as a whole to stop abuse.

The quality of online social relationships

This article seemed to be asking if being online is more productive in social relationships versus face to face. Personally I feel it all depends on the type of relationship. When it comes to having a relationship for example "boyfriend-girlfriend" relationship then the good old fashion face to face communication will always be best. The online relationship can help but only to an extent. In the work place it seems to depend on the type pf job you have. Some jobs require a good re pore with costumers or clients. Where other jobs all you need is to give out or receive information. When it comes to having to build a re pore then online will not substitute face to face communication. When it comes to giving or receiving information then online takes the place of face to face communication, even the articles shows proof of that. Online communication can help out and should never be counted out as an option. Even in the "boyfriend-girlfriend" relationship that requires face to face communication the online relationship could help, for example, if one person has to travel far away for a period of time. Then they can communicate online. The online communication will never substitute face to face but will be more of support.

Man-Computer Symbiosis

To Be honest I did not fully understand what exactly the article was trying to tell me, the reader. I re-read the meaning of symbiosis and read the analogy and it made sense to me, or at least i think! The computer needs to be compatible with humans although doing that requires a wide variety of requirements. These requirements almost seem to be unreachable. When it comes to computers they can answer many questions and do many things any ordinary person could not do on their own. The only thing is that computers need to be previously aware of the answer. Like a calculator, the computer already has all the answers it just needs to be asked the question. The problem that comes with that is there are new things that arise. Humans have a capability of creating a new way of doing things that computers do not. If something drastic has occurred a computer will need to be upgraded in order to keep up with the world. In this day and age I do believe the computer is trying to be more compatible for humans. In a sense computers are attempting to learn. All i need to do is type in the first few letters of my favorite Musical artist and my computer knows who I want to listen to. Computers are still a step behind us humans but are catching up.

90% of Americans own a computerized gadget

I read the article 90% of Americans own a computerized gadget from CNN.COM. The title speaks for its self but it is extremely crazy how many people now a days posses es something electronic. Eighty five percent of Americans own a cell phone! Technology is everywhere and taking over. I know people who would litterly feel physically effected if they forget their cell phone before they go out. An attachment with our technology is growing and growing. So when new devices are brought out to the public most people feel that they need to own it.No one want to be left behind and when an obsession with devices is present people will always want to upgrade. I personally feel all companies know this exact thing. I also think companies have devices that are so advanced it would blow peoples minds. The thing is they gradually make these advances available to people. They give the public enough to satisfy their obsession but leave just enough so they will want more. People rely on technology and the numbers prove it.

The Written Word: From Printing to the internet

I enjoyed the focus of "the past" in the beginning of the article. "the past" is history and for a long time was passed on through word of mouth. Ways of life and past events were all memorized and exchanged from person to person by good old fashion speech. But as time went on evolution took over and the exchange of information was now becoming more and more efficient. Paper was the first great step in this evolution and gradually worked its way up  to things like email. During the reading of this article I had two main things that stuck in my mind. I was wondering which ways of this exchange of info will stick around or diminish. In addition, I was wondering what new ideas will come around.

Over the time things like the type writer have come and gone. It seems that over time there will always be a new advanced way of communicating that will cause a previous option to never be chosen again. Yet with that being said I do find it very amazing and interesting that the first option for information exchange is still around to this day. Even with instant messaging and txt messaging paper still is very important and used often. Paper in the end will always be the most reliable and convenient option no matter how technologically advanced we become.

New ideas always arise somewhere and in some form. Eve when we believe there is nothing else possible that could be made, a new device comes out to the public. Our progression of exchanging information is always evolving everyday. I am excited to see what will happen next. It may seem like there can be nothing else to invent but starting from the early caveman this information exchange evolution has not stopped and will never stop.

Be Who You Want to Be

The article Be Who You Want To be was very interesting to me. It is amazing how a simple website is such a big source of communication. Keeping in touch with relatives and friends from high school is now easier then ever. A single click and you can find out what a person has been up to for that week. Status updates literally take you into the minds of people. You see what people are doing and what they are thinking. That is of course of you display this information on facebook. Keeping everything about your life a secret will be extremely hard to do on facebook but can be done to an extent. I personally never make status updates. I never had an interest for displying what I am thinking at any given moment. I rarely comment on peoples walls either and if I do receive a message for some reason I don't often reply. I enjoy the social network i provides but me as an individual I am very "to myself". Oddly enough facebook does cater to those people as well. I can talk to people to messages which only the people I wish to see can see or I can talk on fb chat which is an instant messaging system.

A certain topic that Be Who You Want To be  Went over that caught my eye was profile pictures. In communications the nonverbal communication is huge. Gestures can portray things faster then if said. Pictures on Facebook are the new nonverbal communication. A picture can show your interests and your dislikes. No words need to be said or discussions held ,all that needs to be done is taking a look at a picture. Like they say " a picture is worth a thousand words".

Week #1 Discussion

Hi so I am a Sophomore at San Jose State University. I honestly want as many people to become a fan of my page or join because I honestly have no idea what I am doing so the more help the better! Face book is the farthest I have gone when it comes to technology. On a personal level I do enjoy listening to music and playing baseball.  Although i love to play baseball I am not much of a fan when it comes to watching it on TV or watching any sport, i would rather play. In my past I have taken Comm 10 and Comm 80 so i do have some teachings in communications. I can say I am fully confident when it comes to having a prepared speech and talking in front of a group of people. Anything beyond that is all coming from the top of my head so one of the major goals I want to reach at the end of this class is a new passion and understanding for this type of communication. Personally i believe limiting yourself to face to face communication skills will greatly set you back in this day and age. As a nation especially we are so technologically advanced and dependant that this is key to the non verbal communication world. After this class I want to broaden my availability for people and also feel like I am out as far as I can be in the world and not just stuck with face to face conversations and hitting refresh every 5 minutes on my face book page. So hopefully this Week #1 Discussion was written in the correct place if not feel free to let me know!
